When we were moving last week I injured myself a bit while unloading the truck! When I opened the door of the truck a table came plunging down hard on my right arm! The bruise is ridiculously large. It was swollen for a couple days.
Any time something bad happens to us we have a choice to make. Did this happen because of my negligence, or was it an accident?
In this case, it was my negligence, because I should've realized the long drive would have jarred loose many items in the truck. But further than this, even when something happens to us that is not our fault, we have a choice to make!
Or did it just happen??"
Well, the answer to the question is more complex than those two answers. God actually has many possible reasons for allowing tragedy or hurt in our lives when we have done nothing to cause it directly.
But my point of this devotion is to draw our attention to the fact that we always ask the question!!! We always think in moral terms!!! Granted, many people deny this urge to think in moral terms, and just equate tragedy with "natural processes." But who could truly deny the need for a moral cause to the actions of the universe?
The truth of life is that when civilizations have arisen and fallen, ultimately, it is because they have done what is right or they have done what is wrong. And when bad things happen in your life, it is always a conscience check.
Genesis 6:5-7, NIV 1984
The culture today however does not believe that we live in a moral universe designed by a God that determines right and wrong for everyone. So they constantly look to technology to save us from whatever problems arise. Rather than look to repentance, they look to their own ingenuity.
"If we just believe hard enough and pursue our dreams, we can fix anything!"
It's nice to hear motivating thoughts for sure!!
But be careful when you hear such things that you're not catching the spirit of this world rather than the Spirit of God, Who is usually calling us to repentance and worship, not more worldly pursuits for knowledge.
